Oh wow. Just ..... wow.

It is true that since writing this entry three years ago, I have changed my views slightly. Though, you appear to not understand the very basic arguments made by we on the Left.

I am not in favour of 'taking only what you need', I am in favour of progressive taxation aimed at everyone. If you succeed, you have succeeded due to the social framework that has allowed you to get to where you are. You succeed because you and your staff are educated, due to publicly funded education, you get to work using publicly funded roads and your property is protected by publicly funded policing. I do not believe that wealth is solely individual. It is a product of society and society is a club that you pay into to help maintain. So yes, you should pay back into the system that has allowed you to succeed so that others have the same opportunity. I do not believe in the logic of the Right: Climb the ladder, and then burn it away.

Your point of course is irrelevant anyway, because we live in a largely capitalist system. For we on the Left, our choice is play by the rules, attempt to change them gradually to a more civilised and equal society. It is the same for those on the Right but vice versa. I.E, I very much doubt you'd refuse to call the police if your house was robbed, purely on the basis that they are publicly funded. I'm pretty sure you still use public roads. You have your principles, but you still have to live within the context of the time. It is the same on the Left. It is not "open the door and let anyone take what they like" because in a largely capitalist society, that would end in me being without food, without protection, and renders my existence a living nightmare.

I wonder, do you lock the doors to your residence? I'm guessing, no. Your principals would not allow you. Why, you probably leave your front door open and hang a sign, "Dear Passerby, Please take only what you need." Such is the moral fiber of the Left. Hear hear indeed.

Here here. great article. I couldn't agree with you more. Here in the US, one of my dreams is that politicians not be able to live off of politics. I think that if you want to serve the country, you should do just that - not profit from it.

I believe in term limits on Senators and Representatives just like we have for a President. I also believe that the pay for a position in Congress should be $1. Lifetime politicians are never interested in the best for the country - only for themselves.

I unfortunately am not as familiar with the system of elections in the UK, so I don't know how something like this would carry over to your side of the Atlantic.

Anyway - thanks for your article.
