In December 2008, after Californians voted to ban same sex marriages. Some, like Brad Dracus even went so far as to suggest that defeating Gay Marriage was like defeating the Nazis. Whilst other anti-gay rights proponents claim that those who are in a loving relationship with a member of the same sex, are conspiring to ‘recruit our kids’. What it is they’re recruiting them for isn’t mentioned. Perhaps a fab-u-lous mass bumming of all Hetrosexual Americans. We just don’t know.
Anyway, aside from the fact that it’s now 2009 and some people still believe that Gay people are inherently unnatural and evil (yet flying on an air plane is still perfectly natural) because the Bible, specifically Leviticus calls Homosexuality an ‘abomination’ (which is funny, because Exodus tells me when I have a daughter I can sell her into slavery and make a handsome sum of money in the process, I look forward to having the support of these Religious nut jobs). Aside from that fact, I was under the impression that the selling point of America, is that it is the Land of the Free? Wasn’t it the Founder’s wish to break away from those who oppressed them? What could be more oppressive to man, than another free man saying “Look, this book, which may or may not contain literal truth, says you’re an abomination!!! So a God who probably doesn’t actually exist, doesn’t like you.” If God is really that uptight and Conservative, but is more than happy to support the hypocritical ‘pro life’ stance of Right Winged Christian America, then that’s a God that I want nothing to do with.
Ridiculous claims by those such as Rob Gagnon who says “First, legal and ecclesiastical embrace of homosexual unions is more likely to undermine the institution of marriage and produce other negative effects” prove that it isn’t about Christianity, it isn’t about the sanctity of marriage, it’s about personal prejudices that are then attached to an out-of-context reading of the Bible, to justify such bigotry. Do you think heaven is really full of hate filled bigots? I hope not.
Gagnon says “..and produce other negative effects”. What are they then? He doesn’t go into detail.
If anything, Hitler, Stalin, Polpot, Ted Bundy, The Yorkshire Ripper, Dr Harold Shipman, Myra Hindley, Ian Huntley and Ian Brady were all hetrosexual and murderers. If anything, hetrosexuality is more likely to produce ‘negative effects’, if that’s the flawed logic these Christian bigots want to put forward.
It’s became almost the call of the Christian Right to assume they are the moral guardians when it comes to sex. They assume they have the right not just to advise people who to live a sexually moral life, but to enforce it. When it comes to homosexuality, when it comes to abortion, when it comes to teaching kids about sex, to these people it’s either “God’s” way or no way. The Bible has been used as the biggest threat to freedom there has ever been. From 16th Century Europe, selling indulgences, to the slaughter of thousands during the reigns of Mary Tudor for the Catholic counter reformation, right down to the oppression of the rights of people, simply because they have a different sexual preference to those who live their hypocritical hate filled lives by the Bible.
Some say that gay marriage undermines the sanctity of marriage itself. Yes, how dare a couple who love each other very much, who happen to be the same sex, who have been together for a very long time and are deeply committed, violate the sanctity of Britney Spears 24 hour hetrosexual marriage. The anti-Gay brigade’s arguments are flawed, weak, and intolerent. The people who spread such bile through the skewed teachings of the Bible are the unnatural ones. They should not be allowed to marry. They should not be allowed to manipulate people by using the Bible to justify their own prejudices.
Take a look at this video.
I find it magnificent. Beautifully put together. Beautifully shot. Sends the right message. If “God” doesn’t like it, if these people are condemned to hell, if Heaven is full of hetrosexual bigots, if heaven is full of people like Brad Dracus and Kenneth Starr, i’d rather go to Hell.
